Computer supported cognitive mapping.

Tutored by Jenny Brightman, Banxia Software Ltd.

This one-day workshop provides a practical introduction to the cognitive mapping technique and the software used to support it.
You will learn about a technique that helps you to capture, in detail, the thoughts and ideas that surround complex issues and see how building a structured, visual representation of an individual’s or a group’s ideas can help you to negotiate a clearer understanding of a problem or issue. You will learn the basics of data entry for Decision Explorer® (the software developed to support cognitive/ causal mapping), and become proficient enough in the software, so that you can move on and focus on the ‘problem in hand’. You will be given an overview of what is possible with the analysis tools in Decision Explorer® and see the analysis in action. There will be an opportunity to experiment with your own ideas, with a tutor on hand to help you, and to help you see how you might use cognitive mapping and Decision Explorer® in your day-to-day work.

The five main things the delegates will learn by attending the course are:

  • Background to the cognitive mapping technique
  • How to build a cognitive map
  • The basics of data entry for Decision Explorer® (the software designed to support cognitive mapping)
  • An overview of the analysis facilities in Decision Explorer®
  • How to get new insights into your data through using the analysis tools in Decision Explorer®

The training methods that will be used are a mixture of theory presentation and discussion, with practical hand-written exercises and hands-on exercises with the Decision Explorer® software

Who should attend:

OR practitioners interested in “soft” OR techniques, managers, consultants, decision makers in business, qualitative researchers, facilitators.
