Hoax emails and virus warningsBanxia Software does not send unsolicited email. If you have received an email claiming to be sent by us, and you have had no contact with us in the past, it is almost certainly a hoax - even if the "From:" states that it was sent from a banxia.com account. False "from" addressesBanxia Software Limited are occasionally referenced in emails with viruses attached. Fortunately, they do not actually come from Banxia, but are falsely addressed so as to confuse people and stop the actual source from being found. "Professional" spammers often use the domain of legitimate companies to disguise their own identities and trade on their reputations. This is unfortunately a trivial thing to do, and there is nothing we can do to stop them. Viruses such as Klez-H and W32/Bugbear-A which account for over 20% of viruses at time of writing spoof the from address, using the address book of the infected computer. Thus if any customer of ours gets infected, and they have you in their address book as well as us, there is a chance that you will get the virus sent to you as though it was from us. And given that we have many thousands of people who email us, we are likely to be referenced often. We are not the source of these viruses, and regret the use of our name in their distribution. Automatic altering by scannersPart of the problem with these spoofed "from" addresses is that they spread misinformation. We suggest that it is actually better to just discard spam and virus infected messages than tell the wrong people that they are infected. In particular, the full headers (and no attachments!) should in any case be sent with any warning message otherwise it is completely useless. Protection mechanismsBanxia software uses the Sophos Anti-Virus software on all computers, and particularly on our email server which scans each email. It is automatically updated within 15 minutes of any new detector being made available. Any incoming email with a virus is automatically disinfected and discarded - it cannot therefore be passed onto our main systems (we get at least one a day so we know this is working). Further, we do not use Microsoft Outlook which is the main target of the viruses. We are therefore confident that the chance of Banxia being the source of a virus is so slim as to be not a possibility, and we will strive to maintain this. If you have any concerns about this, then you are welcome to email us at info@banxia.com. Sophos Anti-Virus: Don't let an autoresponder fool you |
