When you run Impact Explorer for the first time, you may be asked to select a COM (serial communications) port on your PC. This is the port through which the Impact Explorer software will communicate with the keypad system. Impact Explorer needs to be connected to a free COM port. This is a hardware issue and if you are not familiar with your PC set-up, then you should ask your company technical support staff for help. You may need to try each COM port in turn. When you have selected a COM port, either use the Keypad menu, Search for keypads item or the keypad set-up icon on the tool bar. Press any key (except Clear) on one of the keypads that you will be using for your Impact Explorer session. If the connection between your PC and the radio keypads has been established then you will see the active keypad reference number added to the keypad activation dialog.
If you have a modem card and/ or fax software installed on your PC, you may find that they are using the same IRQ (interrupt request) as your COM port, in which case you may have to de-activate the modem/ fax to free up a COM port for Impact Explorer. If you find that you are having problems communicating with the Impact Explorer hardware, this is one possible cause. If you have a modem, turn it off and remove the modem card, if you have fax software, do the same.
There is a troubleshooting section if you are having problems.
